My blog friend Nan Patience asks the following. what do you MEAN you wouldn't kill a rat? Uh, I wouldn't kill at rat? Then of course I don't live where huge rats lurk around waiting to scare the crap out of you, possibly by gnawing on a body part or something. If that was my situation, I might rationalize self-defense. Not to claim some high moral ground or something here, because anyone who knows me, knows I am a mess, but what I try to do is to live and let live with respect to killing things. And before you ask, I do eat the product of other people's killing. I never said I am consistent. My hands are not completely clean because we do employ Larry the Bug Man, who doesn't squash the little critters, but does spray junk that renders them just as dead...eventually. In my own defense, had Mrs. Sneed not said, "I asked you to get a bug man", about ten times, we still wouldn't have Larry. This is a post from earlier about my own rodent issues. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

My solution for avoiding the whole "to kill the rat or not" dilemma is to share my home with 5 cats (and no, I'm not a crazy cat lady -- the large feline population is a result of two cat people combining households). Even though the cats are indoor-only, I think that the rodents somehow sense them and don't even think about entering. I have never seen any evidence of a rodent in or around my house, although I live in an area that is well-known for its ROUSs ("rodents of unusual size").

You're like Albert Schweitzer.

Merle is kindness personified

rats totally sense the presence of cats (so do mice, moles, voles) they stay out of my house. But the lady down the block has no pets ...and has a nest of rats under her garden shed. (big rats.) sometimes one gets inside her house and she has to call the rat man.

Albert S. loved cats and music.
i kill insects but only because they die as I am eating them.

I'm with you merle.... on the whole rat killing business.

cats are very good on (unwanted) rat prevention....unless you have a pet rat and then they can be friends (I've been there on that). I will never leave the pet rodents unsupervised with the cats in the house, but supervised they do okay together - one just has to constantly tell the cats they are to share the space....

the whole spraying for bugs though kinds of freaks me cause I worry about those poisons getting through to all the wanted sentient beings in the house..... lots of critters and kids about.... but I don't know how I would feel if I lived in a place with a 'bug problem' ....

I visited the earlier post. Glad the mouse cage survived Lacey's onslaught.

We had rats once at a house where I lived in San Francisco. It was no fun cohabiting with them, no fun at all.

We hired an environmentally conscious pest dude who came in and froze them (don't know how). It was such a relief.

Rats? I'm against using them as experiments in science labs but if they try to live with me, my instincts say, kill the bastards.

We have an exterminator who comes through our building once a month, but I won't let him spray my apartment. I have never seen a bug. Even if one got in, my cat is amazingly effective.

I'm with you on the rats, too. We've had rats in our back garden and my buiding-mates get all freaked out about them. But I figure, they're outside, so who cares? And if they come in, I'll unleash the cat!

I never knew that Albert Schweitzer and I shared loves for cats and music. Turns out that we also share a birthday (January 14, for the record). If only, if only, I could also claim to be as brilliant!
