If government were a product, selling it would be illegal. --P.J. O'Rourke

If your city is anything like Hooterville the quality of public services is in decline because they just don't have the money to do things right.  More taxes would surely help them do better, as they often tell us, but we don't have more money to give them so a half-assed job is the best they can offer.

An excellent example of the hardships our municipal staff is up against is demonstrated in the picture above.  One of Hooterville's finest replaced a damaged light box cover (shown in light gray), but due to budget cuts was unable to haul away the broken cover.

Okay, maybe it wasn't budget cuts.  Perhaps the crew in charge of hauling things away got their wires crossed with the crew in charge of bringing stuff out.

Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

What perplexes me is how long it takes to do any roadwork these days. In many places, a lane is closed and no one is even doing any work. What's up with that?

That pretty much says it all, right there. Right down to the Big Gulp.

Ditto here.

The budget situation is really serious for local governments, though I do think they need to rebalance their pension costs and some other employee benefits. (Which most places are already doing.) Hopefully someone's hauled away that cover by now!

Things are getting messy out there and it's probably going to get worse before it gets better. I know. Not very optimistic am I?

The same thing happens here. One crew comes and cuts holes in the sidewalk for trees, then a few months later, the tree planting crew comes and plants the trees.
