Cinco de Mayo is a big deal around here. Maybe it is a big deal everywhere, but I can't tell, since I only live here.

When I was driving to play golf yesterday, I noticed that a Mexican restaurant near our house had cordoned off their parking lot with fencing and was setting up for some big to-do.  For just a minute I wondered what was up and then I thought to myself, "Ah, Cinco de Mayo."

Then, I wondered,  "Is Cinco de Mayo this week?

Being mostly retired gives me the luxury of not knowing nor caring what the date is.  I look forward to being even more clueless in the future.

Did you know that even though Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in cities across the good old US of A, that it is mostly a regional holiday in Mexico?  I read that.

Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

Oh you mostly retired people & your cluelessness - a pox on you! Not really. Maybe someday I'll get to be retired and clueless. Something to look forward to!

I remember when I was living over near downtown L.A. people at work asking me if it was all crazy partying on that day. Um, nope. Maybe because most of the folks in my neighborhood were originally from Central America...

Now that I live in another downtown it's a different story though. Ah, college towns.

They actually had drunk driving stings set up here.

I read that, too. And most Americans think it's Mexico's Independence Day, but that's in September.

Same for me re: knowing the date. I also often don't know what day of the week it is.

I was curious about the origins of the holiday. It turns out the Battle of Puebla was fought on May 5, 1862. The Mexicans prevailed over the French, despite being greatly outnumbered.

I can seldom tell anyone what the date is without first figuring out what day of the week it is and then consulting a calendar. I keep wondering if a holiday should feel different from any other day...

I've heard that Cinco de Mayo is not actually a huge deal in Mexico. Maybe that's because it's regional?
