Our Congressperson, Rep.  Gabrielle Giffords was shot and critically wounded by a seriously deranged 22-year-old man this morning.

In addition to wounding Rep. Giffords, the gunman killed six, including federal Judge John Roll and a nine-year-old child.  The shooter wounded an additional 12 people.

It is natural to suspect that this heinous act is somehow rooted in the strident partisanship that fills the political arena these days.  Maybe or maybe not.  By all accounts, the shooter was a loner, with a history of bizarre behavior, and no particular political affiliation.

Perhaps the cost of our particular exercise in freedom includes allowing the seriously mentally ill to easily obtain firearms, but it ought not.

Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

I was watching football all day, so I know nothing about it. I'm sure I will soon be told what I should know. And thensome.

I am beyond glad that no Sneeds happened to be in the line of fire.

I've been thinking that there should be a place for citizens to report sociopaths and psychopaths they know, but I guess that would be Big Brotherish. Still, we've all known a few, but unless they break the law, you can't do anything about them.

One of the first things I said to myself was, "I wonder what Merle is going to have to say about all of this."

I agree with you and one can certainly make a case for tighter gun control as well.

I agree with you and e - and then some. I'm just so confused by our gun laws, or lack thereof. You can say "it's not the gun, it's the shooter" all you want, but if the shooter didn't have access to a gun I'm sure the outcome would be totally different.
