Yesterday was an exciting day at the hardware store. First of all it was every other Friday, as in "I get paid every other Friday." Every other Friday is the day on which I ask my self how people actually live on the money the hardware store or any retail establishment pays? I sometimes wonder if taking a low-paying job simply because I have the luxury of being able to do so, makes me complicit in their not paying a living wage? The real crime is our willingness to buy cheap crap from China in exchange for low prices. At least it seems that way to me. Another exciting thing that happened yesterday is that one of the guys in the store decided it was a good idea to chase down a shoplifter and get some stolen merchandise back. Lucky, no one was injured or worse in the endeavor. This got me to thinking about how people think about right and wrong. For some people, the idea that someone would violate their sense of right and wrong is shocking. So much so, that they would bolt from a store and chase down a thief to retrieve the boss's stuff. I'm of the "shit happens" school of criminal apprehension. I'm not chasing anyone to get my boss's stuff back. Just saying. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

I, too am a "shit happens" kind of person. Move on as soon as possible, I say.

Everyone's sense of right and wrong varies, though the basics seem universal.

What I know is that you are good, through and through. You are. That's all there is to it.

I might go after someone, but only if they were much smaller than me and I was certain they were not dangerous.

I've been held up for the company's money before.

I'm more the "watch, get the details and license plate #, and call the cops" kind of girl. Although, I'm not above sticking my foot out to trip a fleeing thief.

I've thought recently about getting a job of some sort to make me feel useful and generate a little bit of income. But I'm not sure I would work out in the world of retail, where you have to deal with things like shoplifters. There was not a person where I used to work who didn't at some point steel something (Post-it notes?) from the government, but no one would ever have thought to call it stealing. Hmmm...

Once I watched the deli guy at the supermarket chase down some dudes who were trying to get away with a whole cart full of beer.

They got away, but the beer was saved.

Some people clapped.

Actually, most retailers tell their employees NOT to chase or resist a thief. They don't want employees winding up hurt or, God forbid, dead. (Or the resulting liability insurance issues.) I follow the boss' advice on that count!

and then there's the problem of just too much stuff!

glad no one was injured when your colleague decided to play hero - it's just stuff.... no sense trying to make more shit happen!
