If you live anywhere in the United States, with the exception of maybe Wyoming and Alaska, states with big oil money, chances are you are hearing daily about how broke your state, county and local governments are. Unfortunately, none of the bozos running our local government are capable of making hard decisions when it comes to closing a budget shortfall. So they make petty ones. One of the things that the geniuses running the City of Hooterville have done is to stop maintaining the medians. If you spray the medians before the weather warms up, you can prevent weeds from sprouting. Instead, they have created an eyesore. This is a sample of what is springing up all over town. Well, they have resolved our lingering basketball coaching vacancy. The University of Arizona is hiring a guy from Xavier University. He is being paid about $15m over 7 years. Nice money if you can get it. Maybe he can pitch in on the weed situation. So, I reluctantly turned on the local news to get the latest on this coaching business. The weather guy was doing the weather from an Methodist Church and featured a group of kid harpists. He said that they are the largest faith-based youth harp choir in the world. I wonder if there is a second-largest faith-based youth harp choir to dispute that? And I wonder if all the qualifiers in that title indicate that there is a larger, but secular youth harp choir somewhere? I need to know these things, damn it. For those who were interested the featured item at yesterdays birthday brunch was Chicken Wellington. Yummy. Plus, French Toast, homemade hash browns, sliced apples, sliced strawberries, Mimosas, and sourdough bread. And please don't tell Megan, but there was about five pounds of bacon, for those who like bacon. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

Did you by any chance have a birthday brunch at The Arizona Inn? Your description of your meal sounded vaguely familiar...

Citizens may have to volunteer to weed the medians. Maybe some of those basketball players could do it in their spare time.

Here they have stopped filling potholes. I know where they all are, but it's supposed to rain this week. The learning curve never ends.

I never saw five pounds of bacon all in one place before. For long.

I can't help commenting on the 'largest faith-based youth harp choir in the world'.

That's a mighty big claim to be making. I'm glad you're raising questions about it. How many faith-based youth harp choirs has the weather man listened to, exactly? How large were the others, and what were their denominations? Are mixed ensembles with lyres, harmonicas and tambourines automatically ruled out? Must all members of the choir belong to the Methodist Church? Are...

So many questions. So little time.

(Happy belated birthday.)

French Toast Fan here... in fact I'm having some when I walk into town later this morning.

Here to save $$ our governor has made health insurance even crappier, college classes more expensive, and there will be less clearing of snow from parking lots in recreational areas and parks.

As Luck would have it, we are very very slow to actually do work and use funds, so we still have funds from like 5 yrs ago to fix things -- this kind of procrastination pays off in hard times since all the funds are sitting there for several big projects that otherwise would have stalled. (who wants to sit on a half finished bridge without a plate of chicken Wellington?)

Hey, if you don't spray the weeds with poisons, you can eat them! Good in soups and stews.

I like the median - it looks appropriately post-apocalyptic.

except for vegetarians, are there people who actually don't like bacon???

I just gained five pounds, thank you very much!

Happy Birthday, Merle! Sounds delicious, all of it. A new camera to learn about . . .

I know you and Megan are college sports fanatics, but, well, that's a lot of money for sports. They keep trying to do away with some of the sports here at Southern Adjunct University, but the hew and cry is amazing.

Faith based youth harp choirs? Wow, who knew? Not I.

Sorry about your ugly median strips and about the bozos who made the decision.

Your breakfast brunch sounds delicious! I love waffles.

I'd pass on all but the mimosas, hope that doesn't mean I have a problem.

Fraud, negligence, and all of their cousins seem to comprise a great deal of our great society.

I would think the "largest faith-based harp choir" would be in heaven -- but admittedly they may not be young.

I kind of like the weedy median, actually. Weeds are just plants, after all! Think of it as landscaping with native flora, or xeriscaping -- something like that!

Weeds used to be called "Simples" and there was a practical use for every last one of them.
