First Day

Someone owes me an apology. Technically, several someones. Today was my first day of being a Helpful Hardware Man and no one reminded me that going to a job and staying there all day can be very tiring. Had someone reminded me about work being tiring, I might not have done it. I have to say that I was impressed with the professionalism of the staff and management my little Ace store and I was especially appreciative that everyone at the store was so nice to me. Particularly since I wasn't all that helpful. In fact, you might say that I was an overall negative influence on the store productivity today. I basically spent the day following the most patient guy in the world around. He took great care to explain the various procedures to me and showed me how to do some of the things that make up his day. He didn't show the least bit of impatience with my lame attempts to help the customers. One thing that surprised me today was the number of customers who came in with little to no idea about what they were looking for. I shouldn't be that surprised because I've been that customer about a zillion times. In all, it was a pretty good day and I'm thinking that tomorrow will be a better one. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

The first day is always unsettling. In a week you'll be the jaded helpful hardware man.

If you want to give up and quit, I totally support you.

Remember that old jingle, "Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man"?

Hey! That's YOU!

Oh yeah, you allude to that jingle in your post. And here I thought I was being clever. Duh.

How often do you have to schlepp over to Ace? What is this doing to your napping routine?

I hate first days. I hate that awkward standing around not sure what you're doing time.

That was a totally honest post.... so I'll be totally honest with you too.

I'm one of the people that come in without the broken part and a description of "... It's about this long, and I think it was glued to this other pipe - but I have no idea what size it is... In fact, I wouldn't really even know what it looks like because I forgot already"....

And then I would be really pissed off if you couldn't help me.

The only thing you need to remember is "I can only help those that are capable of helping themselves". This eliminates about %93.3 of the customers you will talk with.

I'll bet you do really well.
