Here's my thought for today.

The core function of the federal government is to provide for the national defense.  In 2009 the defense budget for the United States was $680B.  In case you wonder, that is more than the rest of the world combined.

Wouldn't it make sense to cut that figure a few percent and use the money to put some more folks back to work?  Surely in a $680B spending budget, someone can find a few spare bucks.

Despite the blight on the landscape that is Hooterville proper, we live in an area of unparalleled natural beauty.

Yesterday we drove up to Sabino Canyon, a mere 8 miles from Casa Sneed, and took the tram 4 miles up the canyon.

Sabino Canyon is part of the Coronado National Forest and is maintain by the National Park Service.

These are a few of the photos I took yesterday.

Pretty nice if you like rocks.

This plant is an Ocotillo.  It only leafs out when it rains.
This is the Octillo flower in bloom.
Sabino Creek is fed by the runoff from the Catalina Mountains.  We don't have much surface water in the desert, but the creek runs much of the year.
Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

Do you ever want to go camping there? It looks like a great spot.

Beautiful pictures!

I've often wondered the same thing about the budget. If people don't have jobs they might not care if their country is protected...

I'm always amazed at how much beauty there is in the desert. I thought of you today when I bought a little planter of cacti.

A beautiful spot, 2 be sure!

The last area like that I was in was in Ca, the Anza Borrego desert.

Not far from the infamous Salton Sea.

Cheers!

I do like rocks, and exotic desert plants you would never see here in the swamp.

And YES about our role as bullies of the world. YES yes yes.

I agree with Kurt. That place looks like a hiking / camping paradise. I can just imagine the starry sky at night.

Thanks--I don't remember ever seeing an ocotillo in bloom before. [I first learned about them in Big Bend National Park, and then noticed that there are a few here and there in my part of the world as well (central Texas).]

Love the photos! The landscape is so otherworldly to this easterner -- like another planet. I gotta get out to Hooterville one of these days!
