The gate to the front is in at last. It is a perfectly functional and attractive addition, but as always, I'm thinking of the things I should have done differently. Oh, well.

I played golf with the usual suspects on Thursday while the stock market was in free-fall. Good thing I was unaware or Mrs. Sneed might be posting my obit.

"Merle Sneed dead of a heart attack."

Perhaps you've heard or seen the news reports that depict us Arizonans as racist devils.

It must be true since the Rev. Al Sharpton took time out of his schedule to head out our way and make a speech or two and lead some protest marches.

This because our state leaders passed a law that directs the police to check the immigration status of people they suspect of crimes. Or, because our state leaders passed a law that directs the police harass, detain and deport anyone who is in this country while brown.

It depends on your point of view, I suppose.

The real issue is more complicated than what is portrayed in the news or in the streets. You kind of have to live in a border state to appreciate the subtleties of the immigration debate.

There is a lot of anger and fear, two emotions that are not helpful in making decisions.

Of course, California tried this before us and got squashed in the courts, so I suspect the Arizona law will suffer a similar fate sooner or later.

I personally oppose the new law because it is the wrong way to go about solving the problem. Not to mention that I don't trust the authorities anyway.

Imagine if you will, that we suddenly found that millions of Swedes had sneaked into the country. Would us blue-eyed people stand for a law that let the cops stop us to check our immigration status? I don't think so.

I'm 100% in favor of letting people into the country to find a better life. I prefer it be done in an orderly manner, but if folks can just walk in, I sure don't blame them for doing it.

I keep waiting for the leaders in Washington to do something to fix the mess at the border, but they are too busy trying to get reelected to be bothered.

Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

They should stop me. I'm not even a citizen!

My former church in Cincinnati is a "sanctuary church" for illegal aliens - they have a bilingual service & lots of brown folks (and about a billion small brown precious children). Immigration reform, as you might imagine, is high on their agenda. And you know? Spending time in worship with them has made it on my radar too. Here's wishing it shows up in Washington sooner rather than later. But only if they come up with a GOOD fix.

BTW - LOVE the gate!

Those of us who don't live in a (southern) border state can't really appreciate what this is about. But I tend to feel much the same way you do. I want to believe Horatio T. Alger is not just a myth of the past. If we send home all the people who are here illegally, there will be an awful lot of jobs available that no one else wants to do. I wonder if those lawmakers have considered that?

I think the new gate is lovely and I like the plantings, too.

I have been wondering if you were going to say anything about the new law. I was thinking that if you did, I'd most likely agree with you 100%. And I do.
