We elect people to do the things that are good for us, but mostly they do what is good for them.

I saw in the news that 47% of Americans pay no income taxes. That includes families of four making $50K per year. I have to figure out how to get in on that no income taxes deal.

Speaking of taxes, they are on the minds of our state leaders these days, us being broke and all.

We are on the verge of voting on a proposal to adding a penny to our state's sales tax and the hysteria, pro and con, is running high.

On the government side, predictions are being made that unless the increase passes, 20,000 government workers will lose their jobs. On the other hand, if the sales tax goes up, 7,000 retail workers will get the ax, because of decreased buying by the public. What to do?

We are only voting on this idea because our state bigwigs lack the courage to just vote the tax in themselves. There is slim chance that the people will vote for this idea.

I think you should just tax anyone who is attempting to grow grass in the desert because those people must have disposable income! The average Joe will pay one way or the other...

I paid no income tax last year.

Don't you think hysteria was running high even before the issue of adding a penny came up? I see our whole country (present company excepted) as kind of NUTS these days, looking for any way to vent their spleens. I say DUCK AND COVER!

Sadly, increased sales tax does NOT deter me from my purchases.

Hi,
I found my way over here a few months ago from Reya's blog, and lurked ever since.

I delurked to tell you about the "no income tax deal." I got into it by making less money than I used to. Unfortunately, every year I still have to write checks to the Federal Treasury for self-employment taxes, and to my state government for state income tax, and my county government for property tax.

So the "no income taxes deal" isn't as good as it sounds, although things could always be worse.

Sorry I am a sucky blog friend. I am an even suckier real friend, so at least you've got that going for you.

I suspect that very few shoppers will buy less because of an extra penny sales tax. How many people are even conscious of the sales tax when they shop? Realistically, people are going to buy what they want to buy, and the tax just gets tacked on at the end.

I agree with Steve.
