This just in. A new government study shows that US terrorist recruits tend to be, ...young, male U.S. citizens who became radical as part of a group... As one commenter in this morning's Hooterville Daily Dish said, "No shit, Sherlock." Glad they cleared that up. Maybe you read or heard about this doctor named Lopez out in California who is in a truckload of trouble over some liver transplant mess up. It seems he gave a liver to a person who was not that high on the list of deserving folks. What caught my interest about this story was that the doctor isn't in trouble for anything to do with the liver or the surgery, he is in hot water for faking the paper work. The Feds evidently take a dim view of bogus paper work, 'cause they loves their forms and such. The good doctor is facing, and I'm not kidding about this, 130 years in the slammer for faking the paperwork. He would be facing less time if he had just killed the more deserving patient and eliminated the need to get fast and loose with the forms. This is one of the authorities favorite tricks. They pile on about a million potential years in jail, in order to get someone to agree to accept a few years and save themselves the trouble of actually proving guilt. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

Apparently, the majority of cases are settled by plea bargain because people can't afford good lawyers or they don't understand their rights or, as in your example, they are scared. And the overscheduled/overworked public defender often wants any deal that's close to reasonable.
