Is it too early to declare a winner in the 2010 dumbest bastard alive contest? You may have heard Pat Robertson's latest dose of insanity. If not here is a link to the video. Somewhere between 100,000 and a couple of million Haitians are dead from the effects of the massive earthquake that hit their home. That is like a big American city suddenly being wiped out. Pat Robertson is convinced that the Haitians had it coming when God smote them with the earthquake. Poverty and near starvation weren't enough for Pat's God; He had to kick them when he had them down. It is idiocy like this that belies the notion of a personal God. What sort of loving God would off thousands or millions of folks? Babies in their sleep? People who may never have heard of Pat's God? What is God's upside here? Accord to Mr. Robertson, God grew tired of the Haitians living a hell on earth and decided to give them hell in Hell. Different day, same shit, if you ask me. God is said to have destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah over the lack of a single righteous man. Am I given to understand that he has upped the stakes? Not to mention that if there was a God striking down the deserving, Pat Robertson would have been reduced to a lump of coal long ago. I don't subscribe to old Pat's version of God, but if I did I would think his God a complete asshole. Or should I say a complete Robertson? The rational among us see this situation for what it is, a terrible tragedy, nothing more. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

I read his comments and had similar thoughts to yours. You articulated it much better than I could.

Wow. I hadn't heard that. I'm sure Jerry Falwell would have some similar perspectives, were he still alive.

I was just telling Dave last night that this is one of those events that makes you suspect there is no God. Why would God cause or allow an earthquake to demolish a society that is already struggling, with some of the poorest, neediest people on earth? A society where lots of Christian missionaries work and live, where churches have invested thousands of dollars? Why would the bishop of Port-au-Prince be among the dead if God had any control over the situation?

There were people who said the same thing about 9/11. I have no patience with these evangelists. We should be doing everything we can to support and sympathize with the poor people of Haiti -- those dead and those still living in Hell on earth -- instead of telling them they have sinned. Shame on the bastard!

It's a little early but I'm inclined to give him that award anyway.

Someone I follow on twitter responded, "What pact did we make with the devil to deserve Pat Robertson?"
Can't think of a better way to say it myself.

I don't think he's dumb, but I do think he's crazy.

Er, between him, lim-ba-ha-ha and the rest, well, it's no wonder many are finally seeing through the fog in which they speak and have spoken

Merle,
I was considering writing about this jerk today, but you've done it quite nicely. Thank you.

We are all entitled to our own opinions regardless of the obsurdity lurking in them.

LOL! I'm a God-fearing Christian but it appears faith is still not insurance against idiocy. Oh, Pat. Sweet, sweet Pat. May God lead you out of this big, black hole you've put yourself in...
