Sometimes, I have to talk myself down off of a financial limb. This despite my reputation for being a tightwad, a skinflint or a miser, depending upon which of the Sneed family members you consult. I am currently pondering two purchases, with pondering being the operative word. First of all, I would like to buy a Kindle reader. Mostly because I think that it the way newspapers and other printed media is headed. Plus, I don't read so much anymore, because I am too busy (lazy) to go to the book store or the library. When I drag myself to either place, I find that I wander around hoping to find something that interests me. Mostly I never find it. It's kind of like Netflix. The movies I have sent to me, invariably disappoint me. On the other hand, the movies that I can watch instantly from Nexflix on my computer, are either to my liking or I just stop them and try something else. That's how I think Kindle will work. If I download a book and it sucks, I could just download another. Of course, parting with the $353 is the part where I'm stuck. For some reason, I can't make myself order the damn thing. Part two of my angst over stuff is more substantial. It involves this, a Miata convertible. The guy we bought Mrs. Sneed's Honda from has a 2007 low-mileage Miata convertible like this one, same color, for $16,000. There are about 100 good reasons why I don't need this car. I have a perfect good 9-year-old truck with 59,000 miles on it. I drive about 400 miles a month. I might need the money I blow on it, and on and on. The only good reason that I have for wanting it, is wanting it. I'm guessing I buy the Kindle before I get the convertible. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

Hmmm...I can't advise you on this one! Go with your gut!

(Personally, I'm not crazy about the Kindle. Plus I hate buying technological stuff because it becomes so quickly outdated. It's easier to just hang out and wait for the next generation, which inevitably means not buying anything at all! LOL!)

Dude! I really want the Sony PRS 505. You should check out Sony too. They have a new model. I'm all for Readers. It doesn't mean I've gone over to the dark side, I love books too.

I'm with Steve on this one. Plus - ach - the Miata. It's just the cutest little car. I came *this* close to buying one, back in the days when buying a car was part of the things I did.
Plus
a) you have a superior reason for wanting the Miata. The best reason for wanting being wanting. And
b) it's so much more money you may end up saving the $353 by not spending the $16 000 - if you get my drift.

Kindle? Nah, get that car!

with the library, my strategy is to go in, grab each and every book that vaguely appeals to me, to the point where I can't carry another one, and I take them home. I peruse them for the few nuggets they're good for and occasionally find something worth savoring. I try to take a list with me of titles I've heard that I liked the sound of. The radio is usually a good source for that.

The Kindle can be your reward for not buying the Miata.

I just ordered one for my husband allegedly from the kids and me for Fathers' Day. I got a reconditioned one through Amazon for $299. I read somewhere that it's much better to go with the repackaged deal than a used one.

He (the would-be recipient) announced that Apple is coming out with something next year that will "kick the Kindle", so part of me knows the Kindle will ultimately be mine. Is that selfish? :)

I've heard people who have Kindles love them. I've haven't heard that about the Miata, mainly because I don't know anyone who has one.

Life is short. Live it up.

I wish you could have seen my mouth fall open when I got to the part about the Miata, but I'm in the "life-is-short" crowd. But then again, it isn't my money.

As for the Kindle, I've been toying with the same idea. I have a bit of a problem with my vision, and I think it might be easier for me to read. Just like you, I can't seem to bring myself to place the order. You go first and let me know how you like it.
