Do you suppose that people who discuss inappropriate things on their cell phones in public, have always been that way or has the cell phone made them socially misfit?
I personally think it is the former, but cell phones are just another manifistation of their lack of common sense.
For instance, I was cutting some screen material for the maintenance supervisor of one of our neighborhood schools today, when his cell phone rang. This is not some dopey kid, he is a guy in his 60s.
Anyway, he answered and he had a long conversation about a late credit card payment. He told the person on the phone that his wife would send a payment today and that it would be for the minimum amount because that is all he could do at the moment.
Call me old-fashioned, but that is not a conversation I would have in public.
The hardware store bosses included a letter in our paychecks this month telling us that they are capping our pay and cutting back on annual raises. I guess the way things are at the moment, this is far better news than most folks are getting.

That guy needs a lesson from the 'don't pick up unless the screen shows the name of someone you know' school of cell usage.
And even then, if I'm in public, I don't pick up...chrissakes.
My all-out surreal cellphone moment occurred in an airport washroom when the phone rang in one of the stalls. And was answered by a woman who informed her caller of the precise reason why she couldn't talk right then. An honest-to-goodness true moment.

The telephone is not an addiction for me like it is for many people I see. I've always dreaded non essential phone calls, like when Aunt Chatty calls for no reason but to gab. I'll be pleasant , but I dislike speaking into a little device SO much--this is a quirk I giess because I've always been that way with the phone. Non-essential calls drive me crazy, I like short and sweet calls. As for bill collectors, they could never get through to me except by mail. Lately I've had to use my phone A LOT more due to several people close to me being under the weather, needing errands run, etc... but then that's essential, so I don't mind at all, and am glad to have the cell for those important communications.
No one calls me. I carry a cell phone in case someone needs me to call 911.
Our raises vanished long ago, and a few weeks back we got a pay cut. Fun!
I think you're right about cell phones. People who have such conversations in public just aren't very socially aware, and if they didn't show that on the phone, they'd show it some other way.
