If there it an official symbol of Arizona, it's the Saguaro. In reality the Saguaro only grows in the southern half of the state, from Phoenix, south to Hooterville and westward. Further south and east of our fair city, it is too high in elevation for the plant to grow. Did you know that the average American family that has at least one credit card, owes over $10,000? That's is shocking to me. No, not shocking, sickening. Speaking of being deeply in debt, I have always been fascinated by the cars sales business. What else do we do that involves so much overt dishonesty? Anyway, I was looking through the list of almost 800 Chrysler dealers that Chrysler is abandoning. That's one in four of their current dealers. These closures are a huge blow for lots of small towns, because that is where most of these dealers are. In small towns, car dealers are the guys who support schools and civic activities. Chrysler says that 90% of their sales come from 50% of their dealers, so this 25% of dealers that are closing must represent just a percent or two of total sales. Too bad, all around. I was talking to Mrs. Sneed yesterday about a new car to replace the Sneed Family Junkster, my nine-year-old pick-up truck. Then, I check my records and discovered that I drive an average of 80 miles a week. That is mostly going to and from bowling and golf. I guess I'll just drive the Junkster for another few years. It only has 59,000 miles on it. Some Guy Named Bob, The Seafood King and I played golf today at a place called Santa Rita Golf Course in Corona de Tucson. It is a community south of Hooterville and up in the foothills of the Santa Rita mountains. The elevation is 3300 ft, so it is slightly cooler than Hooterville. It is also pretty windy, all the time. The Seafood King doesn't believe in riding in a cart, so he and I usually walk the course. The fellow in the clubhouse who checked us in tried to talk us out of walking because the course is pretty hilly and the weather is pretty hot. Evidently, he mistook us for the run-of-the-mill geezers, rather than the studly specimens that we are. He even came out in a cart to check on us during the round. I guess he thought we might keel over. By we, I really mean me, since I'm a few years older than The Seafood King. But, as I told the golf course guy, we are men and walking a golf course and carrying our clubs is no big deal. It does require a nap when I get home, though. Things in this blog represented to be fact, may or may not actually be true. The writer is frequently wrong, sometimes just full of it, but always judgmental and cranky

Not even a pull cart? I am really impressed. When I got my clubs at age 8, one of the first things I learned was how to sling them over my shoulder. We never EVER rented a riding cart. Once one came to pick us up out on the course when a thunderstorm came up. I was so excited to find out what it's like to ride in one. You probably don't get too many thunderstorms where you live.

I fell out of the napping habit recently. I don't miss being tired in the afternoons.

I'll say this about being broke: at least, you can't run up any debts. That's truly the best thing I can say about it, though - but it's only valid for individuals. Governments are allowed to run up ever bigger debts. For e.g. on the European news last night, we learnt Germany's shortfall on taxes is in the order of 375 billion € - but who's counting?

All I know about golf is: I was the caddy when my dad and his business associates played. It got me a coke at the end of the afternoon. My knowledge of game ends with the fact coke bottles had a bluish- green tint in those days.

I really like that shot of the saguaro, btw.

A friend of mine got a package of saguaro seeds from a friend of his, who bought them at a gift shop in Arizona. My friend planted the seeds in a dish in his kitchen. This was YEARS ago. The cacti are now about an inch high -- apparently they grow very slowly -- and I keep wondering what he's eventually going to do with them, since he lives in Virginia, which is not a hospitable outdoor environment for saguaros. I bet he's got about 30 of them growing in that dish.

You are definitely a studly specimen, definitely!

I forgot that you are a bowler. That's such a funny "sport." So much fun!

Have a great weekend, Merle.

If I played golf I would always take the cart. Always.

I never would have come out to check on you.

Does Some Bob drive circles around you and The King as you walk? Or does he just scoot on up to the next stop and wait and talk to himself?
