This is the striker in a set of bamboo wind chimes on our patio.
English-speakers use the word soul in at least a couple of different ways. In a religious sense it is the essence of us that is, for good or bad, immortal.
I prefer the idea that it is the rhythm of our lives. Soul in that sense is not easy to define. We all know soul music when we hear it, but I think I would struggle to describe what puts the soul in soul music. There is an unmistakable feeling to it, that moves something within us.
I have to agree that my garden is where my soul is.
I'm growing this Coleus in a hanging basket, with a coconut liner. In our heat the liner is better than a plastic or ceramic pot. It is hanging under the pergola and gets diffused light. I ran a drip irrigation emitter to it, so I won't forget to water it. Coleus is an annual, but by removing the flowering stalks and pinching the plant back, it can be kept for several years. I will bring the plant in the house when the weather turns colder. That is, unless I kill it first.
Mr. Sneedlet One, the lovely Mrs. Sneed and I went to see Underdog at the movies today. I have never heard a kid laugh so hard and so loudly. The movie is getting so-so reviews from the smart movie critics, but I can tell you from the perspective of a nearly four-year-old, it gets an A+. Grandparents, of course, are more interested in the delight of their angel, than in the quality of the movie, so we loved it too.

I think I'll give the coconut liner thing a try next summer. Makes sense for container gardening. coleus ~ my grandpa had them in his window boxes with portulaca (moss rose) and geraniums; so i always see the 3 of those together -- and put them in my front beds each year. this year I forgot the moss rose, but it came up from seed anyway and by mid July I saw two little ones among the coleus. happy accident! sweet!
Coleus is one of the few things that grows well in the sun-baked planter in front of my building. We try other annuals there, but they always get fried. That coleus, though, hangs in there and looks nice and leafy until we get a frost.
I didn't know there was an Underdog movie. My brother used to LOVE Underdog when he was little -- must tell him!
How funny and cute of Sneedlet One! I would have liked to have heard that.
Also, hope not all souls are in gardens because that would mean I've lost mine.
I only wish I'd heeded his warning about Ratatouille.
