Lacey
Lacey the Dog, Son Sneed's new best friend.
Young Mr. Sneed got out of the hospital yesterday and is back at home. One of the things that he wanted to do to help out with his depression was to get a dog. Long time readers of the Sneed blog will be saying to themselves, Hey, haven't we done this before? Yes, we have.
Son Sneed had a dog for several years. It was a medium-sized beast of indeterminable breeding, named Gusto. Son Sneed rescued Gusto from the Humane Society. If truth in labeling applied to dogs, Son Sneed would be doing time for naming a dog under false pretenses. This dog and the word gusto form a canine oxymoron. Sluggo would have been more appropriate. Gusto moved, when he moved, at glacial speed. He was so slow that he couldn't get out of his own way. Gusto died a couple of years ago, although he may have just been resting, the vet couldn't be sure.
After Gusto died we made the very big mistake of getting Sadie the Wonder Beagle. She was six weeks old when we got her and Son Sneed didn't have the wherewithal to train her. Sadie ate everything in the yard, plants, sprinkler system, bugs, tools, you name it. We finally gave her to a coworker who had other beagles. Sadie is living happily ever after at another location, far, far away.
Son Sneed decided that this time he wanted an older dog that would not require much training and wasn't that energetic. We went to the Humane Society not expecting much. Usually, the joint is loaded with weird-looking pit bull and chow mixes. We walked from cage to cage viewing the usual suspects. In the last cage was this black, mostly lab mix that looked remarkably like the late Gusto. We stopped and read the card about her.
Lacey was brought in by a family that moved out of state and couldn't take her. She is two years-old, is leash trained, knows to sit and stay and is house broken. We took her out in the yard and played with her for a while. She seemed to be a lovely dog and just what Son Sneed was looking for. Since she was already spayed we were able to take her home with us immediately.
Lacey has been in our house for one day and so far she is a perfect animal. She slept by Son Sneed's bed last night and this morning when I took her for a walk, she walked by my side without so much as a tug at the leash. We really lucked out. The best part was when Son Sneed went out this afternoon for a couple of hours she stayed on the patio, without bothering any of my plants. She does like to jump in the fountain and sit in the cool water, which is no problem.
We are hopeful that Lacey will give Son Sneed something to focus on and will be with us for years and years.

(found you through a friend of a friend...)
Congrats on the new puppy and be glad that Sadie the Wonder Beagle didn't roll on dead things and then sit on your couch. Beagles are inconsiderate like that.
We had the Mexican free-tails in Austin and it's always such a fabulous sight to see them take off en mass and think of all the mosquitoes they are devouring!
She looks really sweet and calm.
Lacey! What a cutey. I wish the authorities would allow me to have pets!
