I started assembling the pergola this morning, with my assistant Sneedlet One. He got distracted and wasn't that much help frankly. He decided that riding his bike back and forth on the patio was way more fun. The fun was interrupted when he smashed into a large flower pot, smashing it to bits. He told his grandmother that he almost broke a flowerpot.
I got the columns and the roof assembled by noon, that's when I figured out that lifting the roof up on the columns was not a one-man and one toddler job. Fortunately, Older Son Sneed called and asked if I wanted Sneedlet Two to come over this afternoon. They arrived with Daughter-in-Law Sneed shortly thereafter.
Son Sneed actually read the instructions for assembling the pergola and he discovered that they suggested that six people be available to lift the roof on the columns. We were three people short of a full complement. We used the patio wall in lieu of three people and the three of us were able to muscle the thing into place. Glad that's over.
The Sneedlets and I went to McDonald's this afternoon so that they could play on the indoor playground and let their poor old grandfather catch a rest. Of course that never works out because I get dragged into who did what to who and MAKE HIM STOP IT!.
Tomorrow is setting up as a nice, quite Sunday. Here's hoping.

Six people to raise high the roof... and you did it with three! I never met anyone who followed assembly instructions "to the letter" and I'd prefer to keep it that way.
Riding your bike back and forth on the patio IS pretty fun.
